In the world of nighttime eye ointments, Soothe PM occupies the "lanolin-free" niche. Most major brand lubricating ointments in the US (Refresh, Systane, Genteal) consist of petrolatum, mineral oil and lanolin alcohol. Soothe has the first two ingredients but not the lanolin alcohol.
The other unique feature of Soothe PM is that it is 80/20 (petrolatum/mineral oil). This puts it about the middle of the range. For comparison, Refresh PM is 57.3/42.5, while Systane and Genteal are 94/3.
People vary a lot in the ointment preferences! Refresh PM and Systane PM each have a very strong following. If you're trying ointments and you don't like one, there really is no substitute for trial and error, but it may help to have more information so you can try something sufficiently different from the last one.
As many of you know, I am not an ointment user so I can't share about this from a personal experience perspective. But I've been familiar with this product forever and I often recommend it when people are having trouble tolerating another brand or if they have a known wool allergy/sensitivity.
